For white clover seeds, vigor is defined as the ability to form seedlings under stress conditions, evaluated by the length of the radicle and hypocotyl. High values of this trait ensure successful emergence during deep sowing or moisture deficit.
Under field conditions, vigor is assessed by the rate of green biomass accumulation and the speed of soil surface coverage by stolons. The trait is closely related to competitiveness in grass mixtures and the rate of regrowth after grazing or mowing, with an inverse relationship observed between the energy of vegetative development and the flowering intensity of the cultivar.
