Variety traits
Trifolium repens L.
The yield of white clover is assessed as the forage productivity of green and dry mass, as well as seed productivity, determined by the components of the yield structure.
In the reference 63 varieties crop White clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
For white clover, the assessment of green mass is conducted by mowing at a height of 5–6 cm followed by conversion to t/ha or c/ha, while dry matter yield requires drying samples to a constant weight. Seed productivity includes assessing the number of heads per 1 m², the number of seeds per head, and the thousand-seed weight.
In competitive variety trials, promising accessions demonstrate a green mass yield of about 60–65 t/ha and a dry matter yield of 5–6 t/ha, with modern hybrids capable of exceeding the standard by 6–20%. Octoploid forms show reduced productivity, and final performance depends on the age of the sward and competition within mixtures.
The yield of the crop is closely related to its high regrowth capacity after mowing and its nitrogen-fixing activity. In the 4th–9th year of life, the share of clover in the yield typically decreases, which necessitates considering sward longevity when selecting mixture components, such as ryegrass or fescue.
