Variety traits
Trifolium repens L.
A key adaptive trait of white clover that determines its longevity and the ability of the sward to recover after the winter period. High winter hardiness is characterized by a plant survival rate of 80% or higher.
In the reference 16 varieties crop White clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
The winter hardiness of white clover is evaluated by the percentage of plant survival or the maintenance of sward density, as well as visually using a spring regrowth intensity scale. An important physiological indicator is the level of stored carbohydrates in the root necks before the onset of winter.
Low winter hardiness of varieties leads to thinning of the sward and weed infestation. The resistance of the crop depends on the management regime, including the timing of the last mowing, as well as the level of nutrient accumulation, which is influenced by phosphorus-potassium nutrition and weather conditions during the growing season.
