Plant height — soft wheat

Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum

Plant height in soft wheat is a breeding trait measured from the soil surface to the top of the spike (excluding awns). It is a critical factor influencing lodging resistance, harvesting efficiency, winter hardiness, and crop productivity.

In the reference 20 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess the height of the main tiller, measurements are taken at the heading stage and refined at the milk-ripe stage. According to the classification, varieties are divided into groups: super-dwarf (up to 40 cm), dwarf (41–60 cm), semi-dwarf (61–85 cm), short-stemmed (86–105 cm), medium-height (106–120 cm), and tall (above 120 cm). This trait is highly variable and depends on both the genotype and environmental conditions.

Plant height is closely related to lodging resistance: short-stemmed and semi-dwarf forms, which often carry Rht dwarfing genes, are more resistant to lodging, making them preferable for intensive cultivation technologies. At the same time, a positive correlation has been established between plant height and winter hardiness, which makes this indicator significant in the breeding of winter wheat forms.
