Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum
An infectious disease of the spike caused by a complex of fungi of the genus Fusarium, leading to premature bleaching of spikelets and the accumulation of mycotoxins in the grain.
In the reference 19 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
The disease is caused by various fungal species, such as Fusarium graminearum, F. culmorum, F. avenaceum, F. poae, F. sporotrichiella, and F. kistleri. They differ in aggressiveness and the ability to synthesize mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol and zearalenone, which determines the level of damage to the variety.
Symptoms appear during the grain-filling stage as premature bleaching of individual spikelets, which contrast with the green, healthy parts of the spike. Under humid conditions, a pale pink, orange-red, or white coating forms on the glumes, and the grain becomes shriveled and acquires a pink tint.
Resistance to the pathogen is a polygenic trait with quantitative inheritance. The key marker for resistance in breeding is the Fhb1 locus on chromosome 3BS, as well as the Fhb7 gene, transferred from Thinopyrum elongatum, which encodes an enzyme that neutralizes the effect of the fungus's mycotoxins.
