Lodging in common wheat

Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum

Lodging in common wheat is the loss of the vertical position of stems, leading to a decrease in yield and grain quality. The trait is determined by the genetic characteristics of the variety, including the presence of short-stature Rht genes and the anatomical structure of the culm.

To assess lodging resistance in common wheat, a visual five-point scale is used, as well as instrumental methods, including the measurement of the Young's modulus, stem bending strength, and the calculation of the stability increase coefficient. Mathematical models allow for tracking changes in culm flexibility from the tillering phase to full maturity.

The genetic control of resistance is based on the use of short-stature Rht genes, which limit plant height. Resistance is also determined by the morpho-anatomical parameters of the stem, such as its diameter, wall thickness, density of vascular bundles, and the chemical composition of the tissues, in particular the content of lignin, silicon, and cellulose.
