Septoria Blotch — Common Wheat

Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum

A fungal disease of common wheat caused by the pathogens Zymoseptoria tritici and Parastagonospora nodorum, capable of reducing yields by up to 50%. It is characterized by the appearance of necrotic spots with black pycnidia and requires breeding using Stb resistance genes.

In the reference 16 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

The main causal agents of Septoria blotch in common wheat are Zymoseptoria tritici, which primarily affects the leaves, and Parastagonospora nodorum, which causes lesions on all above-ground organs, including stems and spikes, leading to shriveled grain. On the leaves, the disease manifests as oval or oblong spots ranging from light green to brown, with characteristic black dots—pycnidia—forming in the center. Infection of the spike is accompanied by the appearance of dark spots on the glumes and discoloration.

Septoria pathogen populations exhibit high heterogeneity and aggressiveness, utilizing effector genes such as ToxA, Tox1, and Tox3 to interact with the host plant. The primary tool for breeding resistance to this disease is the Stb genes, which control both seedling and adult plant resistance. The identification of these genes in common wheat breeding material is carried out primarily through PCR methods using linked DNA markers.
