Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum
A fungal disease of common wheat caused by the obligate biotroph Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, which infects exclusively this cereal species and is characterized by high genetic variability.
In the reference 23 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causative agent of the disease is a specialized form of the ascomycete Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, which is characterized by narrow specialization and does not infect other cereal species. The pathogen population is represented by numerous physiological races capable of overcoming the host plant's genetic defenses, which requires constant monitoring of virulence.
Symptoms appear on all above-ground organs as a white, web-like coating, which eventually densifies into cotton-like tufts and is covered with black dots—cleistothecia—in the final stages. The harmfulness of the infection lies in the reduction of photosynthesis, disruption of tillering, and deterioration of grain quality.
The resistance of common wheat to the pathogen is controlled by specific Pm series genes (from Pm1 to Pm50 and their alleles), which are used in breeding to develop protected varieties. The effectiveness of these genes is unstable and depends on the local composition of fungal races capable of rapidly adapting to the plant's defense systems.
