According to variety testing protocols, measurements are taken between the stages of mass heading and milk ripeness and are recorded in centimeters. The biological range for the species Triticum durum is between 40 and 130 cm. Based on culm height, cultivars are classified as short-stemmed (40–80 cm), medium-stemmed (90–110 cm), and tall (120 cm or more).
Tall forms are more prone to lodging, which negatively affects crop quality and the harvesting process. Short-stemmed cultivars exhibit increased resistance to lodging, and the breeding-driven reduction in height is often combined with an increase in spike size for more efficient plant resource allocation. The parameter also depends on cultivation conditions, including soil fertility and seeding rates.
