Zea mays L. subsp. mays (Maize Group)
An important morphological trait of maize, ranging from 50 to 500 cm, which is considered when determining plant density, adjusting combine harvesters for mechanical harvesting, and estimating yield.
In the reference 471 varieties crop Maize, where this is mentioned in the description.
Maize plant height is measured during the tassel emergence, ear silking, and milk stage phases. Additionally, the height of the lowest ear attachment is recorded, which is directly related to overall stalk growth and is critical for high-quality mechanical harvesting.
Depending on the maturity group, ultra-early and early forms with a height of 0.6–2.0 m, mid-season forms of 2.0–3.5 m, and late-maturing forms reaching over 3.5 m are distinguished. This genetic trait determines the optimal stand density: tall hybrids require lower seeding rates to reduce competition, whereas compact forms are better suited for intensive technologies.
Although plant height is genetically determined, it is influenced by agrometeorological conditions, soil fertility, and the degree of damage by diseases or pests. For grain production, the priority is maintaining a balance between height, lodging resistance, and the efficient distribution of nutrients to the ear.
