For white cabbage, protected ground is used primarily as a technology for seedling production to gain a head start in the growing season, rather than for producing a marketable crop.

The use of protected ground for this crop is aimed at reducing the field growth period by 20–30 days and protecting young plants from pests, such as the cruciferous flea beetle, and late spring frosts. Commercial cultivation of cabbage from seed to head in protected ground is economically inefficient due to the crop's biological requirement for low temperatures and intensive ventilation.
The technology for growing seedlings in greenhouses requires a specific temperature regime: after emergence, the temperature is lowered to 8–10°C for hardening, and active ventilation is carried out before transplanting. Tray technology is preferred, as it prevents root system damage and ensures the production of high-quality planting material.
