Lettuce is extremely sensitive to soil salinity, responding to it with the development of marginal leaf burn. To prevent manganese toxicity, it is necessary to maintain a pH level of 6.5, which converts micronutrients into a poorly soluble form. In hydroponic cultivation, the ebb and flow method is more effective than the nutrient film technique, as it contributes to an increase in biomass and dry matter content.
Unlike thermophilic vegetable crops, lettuce requires a temperature maintained at 18–20 °C for growth and 12–14 °C for head formation. Disruptions to the microclimate and high temperatures in greenhouses during the summer period trigger premature bolting, which reduces the commercial quality of the produce.
