A critical factor for chrysanthemums is preventing root system damping-off, so the cover must be breathable. Operations are carried out after stable sub-zero temperatures have set in to avoid premature growth or the development of fungal diseases due to excessive heat and moisture.

Preparation includes mandatory pruning of shoots to a height of 10–15 cm, which allows the plant to redirect resources to the root and prevent the rotting of the aerial part. Spruce branches, fallen leaves, or frame structures with agro-textile are used as covering materials, ensuring ventilation and protection from moisture.

In regions with frequent winter thaws, the risk of damping-off increases, making non-hardy cultivar groups, such as large-flowered chrysanthemums, unsuitable for wintering in open ground. For such plants, the only reliable method of preservation is digging them up and moving them to frost-free areas.
