Winter protection for Cordyline

Cordyline Comm. ex Juss.

An agrotechnical practice aimed at protecting the growing point from moisture and the root system from freezing, which is critical for maintaining plant viability in open-field conditions.

In the reference 3 varieties crop Palm lily, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary goal of cordyline protection is to prevent the central growing point from rotting due to excess moisture and to protect the fleshy roots from cold. To achieve this, the leaves are gathered into a bundle and tied in December, which prevents precipitation from entering the rosette. The trunk is wrapped with insulation if necessary, and the root zone is mulched with a layer of organic matter approximately 10 cm thick, leaving a gap at the base of the trunk to prevent bark rot.

Due to the absence of vascular cambium in cordyline, tissues damaged by frost or rot are incapable of regeneration; therefore, preventive measures are of critical importance. In addition to individual protection, temporary dry structures are used for mature plants to provide shelter from wind and precipitation. Unlike most woody crops, the primary task for cordyline is waterproofing, as the combination of humidity and low temperatures is fatal to the plant.
