Cultivation
Cordyline Comm. ex Juss.
A method for cultivating Cordyline based on the specific characteristics of its fleshy rhizomes, sensitivity to substrate aeration, and the need for medium pH control.
In the reference 14 varieties crop Palm lily, where this is mentioned in the description.
The specifics of container cultivation for Cordyline are determined by the plant's fleshy, swollen rhizomes with tuberous growths, which are extremely sensitive to waterlogging. To ensure proper development, the substrate must contain up to 40% large inert bulking agents, and planting should be superficial: the rhizome is placed at the substrate level or 1–1.5 cm above it. Unlike Dracaena, Cordyline requires careful control of soil acidity (pH 6.0–7.0) to prevent the accumulation of fluorides.
Mature specimens that acquire a palm-like habit require heavy and wide containers with a diameter of 30–40 cm to maintain stability. The irrigation regime is strictly differentiated: it is regular during the active growth period and minimal during the dormant period. An important feature of the crop is its ability to regenerate from the base via stolons, which allows for crown formation, as well as the need for maintenance during the winter period at temperatures ranging from +5 to +15 °C.
