Tulip winter hardiness

Tulipa L.

The winter hardiness of a tulip is determined by the viability of the bulb in the soil during the dormancy period, rather than the ability of above-ground organs to withstand frost. Resilience depends on cultivar genetics, planting depth, and the presence of snow cover.

For tulips, winter hardiness is an indicator of the bulb's adaptability to soil temperature conditions during winter dormancy. Darwin hybrids are considered the most resilient, with their ability to overwinter directly depending on planting depth, which should be three times the height of the bulb or 15–20 cm in regions with deep soil freezing.

With snow cover, mature bulbs are capable of withstanding frosts down to -30°C. In the absence of snow, critical temperatures for most cultivars are below -15…-20°C. Impaired winter hardiness leads to damage of the growth buds, reduced ornamental quality of the plants, and bulb heaving during soil freezing and thawing cycles.
