The variety is classified as a form or mutation of Allium vineale; in some sources, it is associated with Allium sphaerocephalon. The inflorescence has a unique shape: a purple-maroon center from which long, whimsical, often tangled green thread-like appendages emerge, resembling hair or tentacles. The foliage is narrow, basal, and of a grayish-green shade.

The plant height varies from 40 to 120 cm depending on growing conditions. Flowering occurs from May to July. The plant is winter hardy (USDA zone 4) and prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils. Under favorable conditions, it can produce abundant self-seeding.
