The variety is a landrace from the vicinity of the town of Bernstein in Austria. The root crops have a round shape and a smooth surface, and are distinguished by a dense consistency and a pronounced sweet aroma.
Harvesting begins in September; the variety is suitable for winter storage. Both the root crops, consumed fresh, pickled, or stewed, and the young leaves, which can be used similarly to Swiss chard, are edible.
