Vert grand du Nord is an heirloom tall variety, the plants of which reach 1.2–1.5 meters in height. The variety forms a characteristic 'plume' of narrow, deeply incised and lobed leaves with strong curliness.

The plant possesses high endurance to low temperatures and is considered very productive, although it develops more slowly than many other kale types. The composition of the variety is characterized by an increased content of glucosinolates.

The variety is traditionally used in winter cooking for preparing soups and stews, and its flavor qualities improve after exposure to the first frosts.
