The plant reaches a height of 70–150 cm and has a powerful root system, erect stems, and leafy shoots. The inflorescence is a panicle with large flattened seeds, where the thousand kernel weight is about 7 g.

The variety is valued for its high nutritional value and good palatability, and is often grown in mixtures with alfalfa. The plant is drought-tolerant and adapted to mild climates, but has medium winter hardiness and is sensitive to soil waterlogging.

Nitrogen fertilization is required for cultivation. The crop is susceptible to smut (Ustilago bullata), which requires adherence to appropriate agrotechnical protection measures.
