Varieties of the group are mid-early or late-maturing with a vegetation period of 90 to 120 days. Plant height varies from 50–60 cm to 1.5 meters; plants often have a spreading habit.
Fruits are elongated-conical, often with a curved tip, reaching 10–25 cm in length and 1.5–2 cm in diameter. The walls are thin, about 1.5–2 mm. In biological maturity, the fruits are usually bright red in color, although other color variations also occur.
The fruits are used primarily in dried and ground form as a spice, as well as for the preparation of sauces, marinades, and tinctures.
