The Raigona variety is a local traditional variety of Galicia. It is the result of folk breeding and clonal selection, classified in a number of studies as a Type 2 variety. The fruits are suitable both for fresh market sale and for industrial processing.
The plant is a productive variety, exceeding the Negral variety in yield. The trees are susceptible to fungal diseases, in particular nut brown rot caused by the pathogen Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi.
