RIGGIOLA CALABRESE is a local variety that developed through folk selection. The tree has medium growth vigor and an ascending crown. The variety is early-maturing: harvesting takes place from the last week of September to the first week of October.

Typically, 3 medium-sized fruits weighing about 12.5 g mature in one cupule. The chestnuts have an oval shape and a shiny light-brown shell. The seed is monoembryonic; in most cases, the episperm separates easily.

The fruits are considered versatile: they are suitable for fresh consumption, including roasting, as well as for drying and processing into flour.
