The variety «Mayfair» belongs to the species Cenchrus advena, known as purple fountain grass. The species differs from the invasive Cenchrus setaceus genetically and morphologically, and is also considered less aggressive due to seed sterility.
The plant is a grass forming dense clumps with narrow leaves and graceful drooping inflorescences. It is a thermophilic and drought-tolerant species with limited winter hardiness; in temperate climate conditions, it is often cultivated as an annual.
