Variety description

The variety forms a very large, compact, and dense rosette of broad green leaves. The plant has an upright vertical habit, which promotes better sanitary conditions for the lower part of the rosette. Leaves are crisp and have the slight bitterness characteristic of escarole.

The variety is classified as very early and is valued for the ease of forming a heavy heart. It is well-suited for blanching to obtain a milder taste. It demonstrates good resistance to low temperatures, maintaining its marketable appearance. Intended for cultivation in the open field and under covers.

It is a traditional variety, known for over 115 years. In European catalogs, it may be referred to as «Nummer Vijf 2» or «Batavia maraîchère». It is not a hybrid and belongs to heirloom varieties.
