In the wild, the plant is an evergreen shrub or a small tree 2.5 to 4.5 meters in height; in container cultivation, it reaches 0.5–2 meters. The fruits are small, 2–5 cm in diameter, have a round or oval shape, sweet peel, and sweet-and-sour pulp.
The plant is noted for its ability to withstand short-term temperature drops down to –7...–10°C. The fruit ripening period occurs in late autumn and winter; flowering is usually observed in spring or summer.
The species is native to Southeast Asia and is widely used as a decorative container or garden crop in the subtropics. The fruits are consumed fresh or used for making preserves, jams, and marmalade.
