The Ricalate variety belongs to the Navel orange subgroup and is a spontaneous mutation of the Washington Navel variety. The tree is characterized by a lack of thorns and good vigor.

The variety is late-maturing and ripens later than the Navelate variety. The key economic feature is the resistance of the fruit to premature drop, which allows them to maintain quality for a long time while remaining on the branches.
