The variety belongs to the Citrus reticulata or Citrus deliciosa group of mandarins. It possesses the property of vegetative parthenocarpy, thanks to which fruits form without the participation of pollination and do not contain seeds. The variety is self-compatible.

In breeding work, SALTEÑITA is used as a parent form for developing new seedless mandarin varieties. Research aimed at creating tetraploid plants did not reveal spontaneous tetraploids in this variety.

The variety belongs to the table citrus category intended for fresh consumption. Its origin is linked to European breeding of the early 19th century.
