The variety Pallagrossa (Palla Grossa) is a Corylus avellana that, due to its characteristics, is more often considered a genetic resource and potential rootstock. A distinctive feature of the plant is its very low capacity for root sucker formation, which makes it promising for use in commercial orchards to prevent unwanted growth.
The plant belongs to the late-flowering category: male and female flowering occurs in the second half of February or later. Male inflorescences are distributed evenly throughout the tree canopy. The nuts have a subcylindrical shape. Genetic studies identify the variety by incompatibility alleles S5 and S25.
