The variety originates from the Nebrodi Mountains area in the province of Messina, Italy. It is genetically identical to the Panottara variety. It is historically used in local agriculture, as well as for preventing soil erosion and stabilizing slopes.

In its growing region, the variety is traditionally cultivated in the form of a multi-stemmed bush with a planting density of 400 to 800 plants per hectare. Scientific work with this variety is focused on methods for its in vitro sanitation from apple mosaic virus.
