The plant reaches a height of 1 to 2 meters, has a spreading habit and large, pinnately-lobed leaves of a silvery-green or glaucous-green shade. The variety is grown as a perennial in warm climates or as an annual in regions with cold winters.

The growing period is 100–120 days. The inflorescences have a rounded-flattened shape, a dense structure, and reach 8–12 cm in diameter. The bracts are predominantly bright green; in cool weather, they may acquire a faint purple hue.

Cultivation requires fertile, well-drained soils and abundant sunlight. When grown from seeds, a period of exposure to low temperatures may be required to stimulate bud formation.
