Spinoso sardo is a well-known local artichoke ecotype widespread in Sardinia. Populations of this ecotype are characterized by a specific polyphenol profile, including the content of chlorogenic and dicaffeoylquinic acids.

Breeding work is aimed at improving earliness, head productivity, and increasing plant vigor. One of the key objectives is the cleaning of planting material from viral pathogens that cause the degeneration of traditional plantings.
