The Umbrella variety belongs to the category of turf grasses, which are characterized by fine leaf texture, increased sod density, and the ability to withstand low mowing, unlike forage varieties.

The plant underwent variety testing as part of the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) under the number DP 50-9411 and was included in the Bundessortenamt variety trial lists.
