The name «Isastaim» translates as «male plant» and is used by nurseries to designate male seedlings. Sea buckthorn is a dioecious crop, therefore the presence of a male specimen is mandatory for the fruiting of female plants.
One male plant is capable of providing pollination for 5–8 female specimens. Since pollination occurs via wind, it is recommended to place such seedlings on the windward side in relation to the fruit-bearing bushes.
Male plants do not produce berries. Specific morphological characteristics, such as height or the presence of thorns, depend on the species of the specific seedling, as «Isastaim» is a collective designation for male forms, not a breeding variety.
