The variety is the result of the cross (L92 x Minerva) x Emir x Zephyr and is distinguished by a relatively short stem. A key feature of the variety is the presence of the recessive mlo gene, which provides a consistently high level of resistance to powdery mildew.
In the 1980s, the variety was characterized as lodging resistant, however, in subsequent years this characteristic was assessed as moderate. On fertile sandy and peat soils, the variety showed good yield results, gradually giving way to more productive lines.
Atem was intended for use as spring barley and feed raw material. It was widely used in breeding programs due to its disease resistance, while in the mid-1980s the variety was excluded from the malting barley category.
