The Athenaida variety is a six-row barley obtained from local Cypriot varieties. It is characterized by a high capacity for adaptation to various growing conditions and exhibits tolerance to drought, which is particularly pronounced in the regions of Greece.
During breeding work using the method of within-variety selection at ultra-low sowing density, lines with the potential for significant yield increase were identified. The variety is being studied for its response to barley yellow dwarf virus and its allelopathic ability to suppress weeds, such as common poppy (Papaver rhoeas).
In scientific studies, this barley is used as a contrasting genotype for investigating the plasticity of the leaf apparatus under moisture deficit, as well as in the development of selection methods within commercial varieties.
