Steptoe is a six-row, rough-awned, coast-type barley derived from a cross with the Unitan variety. It is a feed crop that was historically widely cultivated in the northwestern United States due to its yield and adaptability to various conditions.
In agronomic research, the variety is characterized as drought-sensitive and susceptible to fungal diseases such as rust and Fusarium. In modern science, Steptoe is best known as one of the parents of the Steptoe × Morex mapping population used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping.
The variety was actively used in experiments to evaluate the effect of cereal feed on the productive performance of farm animals.
