The variety is classified as sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) and is used as a rootstock that provides a growth-restricting (dwarfing or semi-dwarfing) effect. The plant is preferable for use on heavy or wet soils.

The rootstock has limitations, including susceptibility to the buckskin disease and Phytophthora cambivora. There are also reported cases of incompatibility with certain sweet cherry varieties, which manifest as overgrowth of tissues at the graft union.
