The Hatfield Rose variety is a sport of the Westfalen variety. The plant is a compact shrub 1.20–1.40 m tall with mophead-type spherical inflorescences. The flowers have serrated petal edges and a light "eye" in the center. The color varies from pink to pinkish-red; when grown in acidic soils, it may acquire a purple or lilac hue, but rarely becomes intensely blue.
The plant prefers partial shade and fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Flowering occurs on last year's shoots, so pruning should be minimal and limited to the removal of faded inflorescences in the spring. The variety is used in ornamental gardening as a specimen plant, in group compositions, or for cut flowers.
