Deciduous spreading shrub with a spherical crown, 0.8–1.5 m in height and up to 1.5 m in diameter. A characteristic feature is the dark purple, almost black young shoots. Leaves are dense, elliptical or obovate in shape, 10–20 cm long, deep green in color, and serrated at the edges.

Mophead-type inflorescences are dense, spherical, about 15 cm in diameter, and consist mainly of sterile flowers. Flowering occurs from July to September on the previous year's shoots. Frost resistance is estimated as low to medium; requires mandatory winter cover to preserve flower buds.
