The shrub is characterized by vigorous growth and forms a crown about 1.5–1.8 m wide. The shoots are strong and resistant to lodging, the leaves are large, emerald green with a serrated edge and dark cherry-colored petioles.

The plant is winter hardy, prefers fertile, acidic, moist, and well-drained soils. Does not tolerate drought, calcareous soils, and strong winds, which can damage the shoots.
