The shrub is deciduous, compact and branched, reaching a height of 1.0–1.5 m and a width of 0.8–1.5 m. The leaves are elliptical or lanceolate: in spring they have a purple or reddish-brown hue, they turn green in summer, and in autumn they color in purple-red or burgundy tones.
The lacecap-type inflorescences are flat, consisting of central small fertile flowers surrounded by large sterile marginal flowers. The flower color varies from white and pink to blue depending on soil acidity.
Flowering is prolonged, from July to September–October. The plant prefers partial shade and wind-protected sites, belongs to the 6th hardiness zone and requires cover in severe climatic conditions.
