The Barral variety is a local historical variety, cultivated for centuries on the island of Madeira. Apple trees of this variety are adapted to the conditions of the island's mountainous regions and were historically planted along the perimeter of agricultural plots to protect other crops from the wind.

The primary purpose of the fruits is processing; in particular, the variety is traditionally used for making Madeira cider. Detailed agrotechnical characteristics, such as tree height or resistance to specific diseases, are not presented in open sources.
