The variety is a historical representative of folk selection, first mentioned in 1664. The tree is moderately vigorous with an upright spreading crown and characteristic twisted wavy leaves. Fruiting is concentrated on spurs, and the variety is prone to biennial bearing.

Fruits ripen in early to mid-season, usually in September. Due to a tendency to form mutations, there are many varieties of the cultivar, including Broxwood Foxwhelp and Red Foxwhelp. The variety is susceptible to scab, especially in conditions of high humidity.
