The Gyllenkroks Astrakan variety has a historical connection to Russian apple trees and was identified in the mid-19th century. Under this name, both mature fruit trees and specimens in genetic banks can be found, and there is also a separate variety of wild apple with the same name.

The fruits of the variety are categorized as dessert, and the variety is actively used in breeding. In particular, it served as a parent form in the development of Finnish varieties and the Alice variety.
