The variety «Improved Black Stayman» is known as breeding material for research. In 1961, scientist Haig Dermen from the USDA produced new forms, such as «Dermen Black Stayman» and «Dermen Stayman 3-6-6», during experiments with the irradiation of scions of this variety.

Specialized descriptions containing information on maturity group, tree height, disease resistance, or detailed fruit characteristics are not available in open sources. The variety is mentioned in apple lists as a dessert cultivar, however, detailed agronomic characteristics are absent.
