This name most often refers to the variety Champagne Reinette. Its medium-sized fruits have a flat-round shape, often with five ribs, and thin smooth skin ranging from greenish-yellow to golden, sometimes with a blush. The flesh is firm, crisp, with a wine-like sweet-and-sour taste. A winter variety, the fruits ripen at the end of October and are suitable for consumption until June.
The name Jahrapfel is also applied to the variety Welschisner, known since the 17th century. The tree of this variety is vigorous, with a dense crown, distinguished by hardiness and suitability for cultivation in harsh climatic conditions. Due to the historical nature of the name, it may cover various genetic forms of apple trees, requiring clarification of origin in each specific case.
