The variety originates from Finland; the tree was grown from a seed by teacher T. Virtanen in the schoolyard in the Jalkaranta district of the city of Lahti. In 1920, the gardener Onni Liipola began propagating the variety at the Osmola nursery. The variety is sometimes referred to by the synonym Lahden Kesä.
