The name Jakober (or Roter Jakober) appears in lists of old varieties and is classified in a number of sources as a collective name for several local variants. The variety, also known as Früher Jakober, is of Swiss origin and has been mentioned in documents since the mid-19th century.

The fruits of this apple type ripen in August. They are characterized by a green-yellow color and a tendency to lose consistency quickly, during which the flesh becomes mealy. Due to mediocre taste qualities, the fruits are used primarily for culinary purposes or for cider production.
