The variety is a red mutation of the original James Grieve variety. The main difference lies in the intensity of the fruit coloration, which features bright red striping. In other respects, the characteristics of the fruit and tree correspond to the base variety: the apples are medium-sized, juicy, and have a sweet-and-sour taste.
The variety belongs to summer apples, used fresh as well as for cooking and processing. The fruits have thin skin and are prone to rapid spoilage, which limits their transport.
The tree is characterized by regular yields and serves as a good pollinator for other varieties. The variety is susceptible to fire blight, fruit rot, aphids, and tree canker; fruits are prone to shedding upon ripening.
